A town treasure in the Municipal Collection
The famous painting « l’Escamoteur », attributed to Jérome Bosch (1450-1516) is part of the town’s collections.
It was a bequest Louis Alexandre Ducastel (1793-1872), who was a solicitor (notaire) in Saint Germain en Laye from 1813 and a member of the Town Council and temporary Mayor in August 1835 and 1839.
The collection seems to have been primarily built up by his father Alexandre Jean Ducastel, named as artist-painter and collector.
This painting was exhibited in the Municipal Museum, which was situated on the second floor of the library until it was stolen on December Friday 1st 1978. Found again on February 2nd 1979, it is since been preserved in the town’s collection.
Today, the museum is closed to public.
Each year, during the « Journées du Patrimoine » (Cultural Heritage Days) “l’Escamoteur” is exhibited. It is also lent out for temporary exhibitions in France and abroad.
