The National Forest of Saint Germain en Laye

With 8,600 acres, this is the second largest forested area in Yvelines, after the forest of Rambouillet (31,800 acres). A wide variety of species can be found here: English Oak, Beech, Hornbeam, Scots and black Austrian pines, as well as, ash, wild cherry, sorb, birch and chestnut trees.
Travel through this forest with itineraries for a leisurely stroll or a hike: the « Sentier des Oratoires » (18km), the « Sentier Sylvestre » (2km) or even the « Sentier du Val ». (Brochures available at the tourist office)
This national site includes:
- The magnificent André Le Nôtre terrace.
- The « Château du Val » : now a retirement home for members of the « Légion d’Honneur » (the Legion of Honour).
- The education institution of the Légion d’Honneur: boarding school for girls built at Napoléon’s request.
Do not be surprised if you meet a policeman on horseback or a guard, who are in charge of the protection and surveillance of the forest and its users.
